I walk out to the edge of a lake at the break of dawn when the world has yet to wake up. The water is absolutely still, mirroring snow clad mountains silhouette against the early morning deep blue sky decorated by clouds lit pink by the low sunlight.
I know beneath the quiet lake surface there is a busy marine life going about their business, barely making a ripple when they surface. Below every stone life is thriving. There is energy around the trees speaking of life they harbour and the symbiotic relationship they share with the rest of the forest.
It is perfect. I take a deep breath in experiencing the majesty of this planet and look right. A bench moist with the morning dew. It's the first sign of the human race I see. A sinking feeling and almost instinctively, I try to find signs of careless litter around. Thrilled that I do not see any, I go “Yes!” There is still hope for this beautiful planet.
THAT is my inspiration. I set up my camera and try to capture my feeling, my experience within a rectangular frame, with the hope that once up on your wall, it may provide a window to the beauty I experienced.
Some images are well planned, some just happenstance but most fall somewhere in between. A well planned shot would start with knowing what I wanted to photograph. As an example, a cityscape with the super moon rising above it. A couple of apps would help determine the date and the best time for the shot. Google earth and google maps along with relevant apps would help predict exactly where to position myself, so that The rising moon is seen exactly above the point I intend it to be. Visualizing the composition helps decide exactly what lens needs to be used. After that is a waiting game interspersed with prayers to the weather Gods and studying weather websites to determine the clouds, direction of wind, level of visibility etc. Then with Lady Luck by my side, I set up and wait for the moment to be just right. On the other end of the spectrum is an exclamation “ OMG! Look at that shot! Where is my camera?” Most images are generally made with some plan and some happenstance. Clicking the camera is only part of the process and it is on the computer the image comes to life. I will seldom work on an image right after capturing it. Sometimes it is even weeks before I sit to complete the image. Now I am not a purist so far as the image is concerned. The aim is not to replicate what the camera saw. The final image however is a combination of the feeling at the time of the shot, how the image on the computer screen speaks to me at that moment and a visualization of the finished print hanging on the wall. Without going nerdy, I use a combination of softwares including Lightroom, Photoshop and a number of independent plugins with several years of experience to prepare the images for one of the top printers in the country who would then use archival materials to ready a print for your walls that will hold their colour and look for many years to come.
